Best Frame Size for Instagram Photos (Square vs Rectangle Guide)
Pick the best frame size for Instagram photos (1:1 square, 4:5 portrait, and 16:9 landscape) and avoid cropping when you print.
Best Frame Size for Instagram Photos (Square vs Rectangle Guide)
Instagram content comes in a few common shapes: square (1:1), portrait (often 4:5), and landscape (often 16:9). The best frame size depends on which shape you’re printing—and how much cropping you’re okay with.
Square (1:1) Instagram photos
For true squares, choose square print and frame sizes (or a custom mat). Common approaches:
- 8x8 or 10x10 in a square frame
- Square photo matted into a larger rectangular frame for a gallery look
Portrait (4:5) Instagram photos
Portrait posts often map well to 4:5. This can work nicely with 8x10-style framing (which is also 4:5), but check your exact export.

Landscape (16:9) Instagram photos
Wide landscape posts can look great in panoramic frames or matted into a larger size. If you force a 16:9 image into a more “standard” frame, you’ll crop heavily or end up with large borders.
Preview the crop before you print
Upload the image to the Photo Frame Size Tool, then try a couple of candidate frame sizes. Use the preview to decide whether you prefer cropping (fill) or borders (fit).
