Aspect Ratio Explained: Why Your Photo Doesn’t Fit the Frame
A simple explanation of aspect ratio, common photo/print ratios, and how to avoid cropping when your photo doesn’t match the frame size.
Aspect Ratio Explained: Why Your Photo Doesn’t Fit the Frame
Aspect ratio is the shape of an image: width compared to height. Two photos can both be “big,” but if their shapes differ, they won’t fit the same print size without cropping or borders.
Common photo and print ratios
- 2:3 (4x6, 8x12, 12x18)
- 4:5 (8x10)
- 5:7 (5x7)
- 1:1 (square prints)
What happens when ratios don’t match?
- Crop (fill): you keep the paper full, but lose edges.
- Borders (fit): you keep the whole photo, but may see white space.
How to avoid unwanted cropping
Before you order a print, preview it in-frame. Use the Photo Frame Size Tool to test the frame size and see whether “fit” or “fill” looks better for your photo.
